Mobile Phone Market Sees Double-Digit Growth

According to IDC, the global mobile phone market had solid double-digit growth in the second quarter.  Vendors shipped a total of 306 million units, a 15 percent increase from the same period a year earlier.  The accelerated growth comes from increase competition from the high-end market and increase demand in emerging regions.

Smartphones are seeing growth rates near 40 percent year-over-year, while the rest of the industry is growing at roughly 10%. But IDC expects to see more mid-range handsets with higher-end capabilities in the market as the line between a smartphone and a feature phone is quickly blurring.
