Generate More Sales: 5 Ways to Improve Store Design
By Allan Pulga
You only get 5 seconds to land your next sale. Your store better look good.
Andrew Pierce, Director of Sales for Kiosko, a U.S. retail display manufacturer, says consumers make a subconscious buying decision within 5 seconds of walking into your store. “Does your location make a positive first impression?” he asked in a recent e-newsletter from TracPoint Wireless.
To make sure your store makes the best of its 5-second introduction to customers, Pierce offers the following store design tips:
1. “Develop a plano-gram”Create a visual plan of how and where everything in the store should be positioned. It should be simple, but with much attention to detail and customer impact. As a consistent layout “recipe” for employees in every location, it should ensure that displays are organized, consistent and full.
2. “Lighting”Pierce’s advice is easy: “The more, the better.” Bright locations make customers feel more comfortable because everything in the store – product displays, signs and general store layout – is more visible.
3. “Interactive displays let the customers ‘kick the tires’”It’s a known fact that customers who can touch and feel the product will be more likely to purchase that product. Don’t hide everything behind glass showcases. Provide demos and comparative, tactile product displays.
4. “Less is more”Attractive and well-built fixtures are more effective than busy, slat wall presentation throughout the store. And investing in fixtures with modular design allows for future merchandising flexibility.
5. “Let the customer take their coat off”The point-of-sale area should allow the customer to actually sit down and spend more time in your store. Even just letting the customers pause and scan the point-of-sale surroundings can lead them to spend more money. A family-friendly area is another good strategy to put customers at ease – a TV, books, and toys can keep kids entertained and free up parents to shop at their own pace.
